An annual flooding of bold imaginations, the Student Show is coming to the Cornwall Regional Art Gallery from May 19 to June 13. Featuring a variety of works by local high school students, the Student Show gives a chance to budding artists to share their work beyond the school walls.

The show’s opening reception takes place Saturday afternoon, May 19 at 1 PM. Several artists should be in attendance. The reception is free and open to the public.

Melanie Brûlée

A transplanted Cornwall songstress returned to the Seaway City for an intimate showcase – and she brought a friend. Melanie McDonald – who goes by the stage presence Melanie Brûlée – performed at the Cornwall Regional Art Gallery May 3rd along with noted folk artist Jadea Kelly.

The two-hour program included a few numbers that Brûlée made popular locally when she was the part of Mel and the General Electryk, as well as a pile of original material.

Brûlée characterized the show as a “bring your own chair” event.

“It’s like a house concert, but in the art gallery,” she said.

Kelly, who is Brûlée’s roommate in Toronto, is a folk musician from Whitby. She has released two LP’s and two EP’s to date. Kelly’s 2008 full-length album, Second Spring, was honoured with the “best country” award at the 2008 Toronto Independent Music Awards.

Tickets were $10, if you surfed over to the art gallery’s Facebook page, and “liked” it. Tickets at the door were $15.

 

Learn about tools and resources available to Culture Days participants at an information session hosted by the Cornwall Regional Art Gallery with Culture Days staff in attendance. Aimed at helping participants increase the impact and success of their Culture Days activities, this information session is open to artists, professional and volunteer-run cultural groups, libraries, museums, schools and anyone else wishing to participate in the third annual pan-Canadian celebration of arts and culture taking place on September 28-30, 2012.

What is Culture Days?

Culture Days is a collaborative movement to encourage awareness, participation and engagement of all Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities. Now in its third year, this Canada-wide celebration represents the largest-ever public participation campaign undertaken by the arts and cultural community in this country.

Culture Days will feature free hands-on activities that invite the public to participate in the “behind-the-scenes” world of artists, creators, historians, architects, curators, designers… in their community. Through this exchange, artists and creators have a unique opportunity to engage people of all ages in their creative practice. Culture Days will take place on September 28-30, 2012, in all provinces and territories.

The Cornwall Regional Art Gallery held a free admission commemorative program with video screenings. The evening drew on original survivor story, documentary film footage and artwork of the Holocaust and created a fitting ambience for the Memorial.

This Memorial Day Program of Remembrance is in its second year as an annual event in Cornwall. An educational task force of local individuals once again organized the event to inspire citizens and leaders to confront hate, prevent victimization, and promote human dignity.

It has been over 60 years since the Holocaust, the systematic extermination of six million Jews and many others in the mid-twentieth century. To survivors, the Holocaust remains real and ever-present, but for some others, sixty years makes the Holocaust seem part of ancient history. Year-round we try to teach and inform others about the horrors of the Holocaust. We confront the questions of what happened? How did it happen? How could it happen? Could it happen again? We attempt to fight against ignorance with education and against disbelief with proof.

But there is one day in the year – Yom Hashoah or Holocaust Remembrance Day – when we make a special effort to remember. Upon this one day, we remember those that suffered, those that fought, those that died and those that are still suffering.

We also use this day to raise awareness of the ongoing consequences of racism, tribalism and other forms of discrimination and prejudice that can still lead to persecution and genocide in our day.

About Apples & Art

For one weekend each fall, residents of Cornwall and the surrounding area are offered a chance to meet and talk to their local artists, see them at work, visit their homes and studios, and learn about their various disciplines. This great activity is combined with a chance for a spectacular autumn drive, visits to local landmarks, and an opportunity to enjoy delicious apple fares.
Priority is given to artists living in the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry. All art mediums and disciplines are eligible, including but not limited to: painting, photography, sculpture, printmaking, pottery, wood, glass, textiles, jewelry and mixed media.

Cynthia Gatien has been painting in various forms for the past 20 years, from walls to floorcloths to furniture to canvas. In the 1990¹s, she co-founded the innovative Fabulous Floorcloth Company with fellow artist Jayne Allister. From their Montréal studio, they created sumptuous one-of-a-kind floorcloths, painted vintage furniture and decadent objets d¹art.

2002 saw Cynthia and her family move from their urban brownstone to a 180-year-old house in South Lancaster, a small hamlet on the St. Lawrence River in Eastern Ontario. This historic home became Cynthia¹s new creative outlet – with every square inch an ever-changing joyful riot of colour, pattern, texture, and artistic inspiration.

Her love of colour and her passion for flowers, vintage textiles, and eclectic patterns bring Cynthia’s work to vivid life. Her inspirations include Henri Matisse and Pierre Bonnard mixed with a dash of modern-day influence from décor legends Kaffe Fasset and Tricia Guild.

Congratulations to artist Dwight Saunders. His fabric sculpture piece “Blue Rose” gathered the most votes from the public for the People’s Choice Award.

This year the Sounds of Buskerville will give its proceeds to the Cornwall Regional Art Gallery!

The Sweet Sounds of Buskerville

On February 11th, 2012, Cornwall band General Electryk launched the 12″ vinyl record of their debut album “Petty Little Things” at the Cornwall Regional Art Gallery. The group also performed songs for the crowd of fans and music enthusiasts. The evening also featured an exhibition of the finalists in the art contest the band organized for the vinyl album’s cover.
